Regarding Bicycles.
Not bringing a bicycle to Mexico City was a tough choice, but seemed logical and practical at the time. I thought that the newness of my environment would temper my wish to ride and that later I would get around to finding a bike. However, it has been a scant three weeks without cycling and my feet are itching for some pedals. Not just any itch, that “I slept in poison oak” type itch. ...

Transition: Mexico City Edition
Today, I felt good. I felt real good. I got up early and worked a job I will get paid for. I came home and got some stuff done. I went to a coffee shop for the first time since I have been here and finally completed reading One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. After dinner, I played a great game of poker with my roommates and had to do the dishes because I lost. Basically,...

Mexican Food—Food in Mexico
Mexican food is delicious. Food in Mexico City is delicious. Even when I am eating at home I am benefiting from the Mexican style of eating. I get to eat mangoes all the time, and can’t imagine why anyone would consider eating mango without hot sauce and chili powder. Hot, fresh, hand-made tortillas are a to be had for mere cents on the pound from the corner tortilleria. Limes on...

I have had a head cold the last few days. Aside from all the normal things a head cold does to a person, this one has caused me to recoil violently whenever I have thought about writing a new blog post. I seem to be on the mend, but downtime allowed a lot of potential material to pile up, leaving me overwhelmed by the broad topical possibilities for a post. Since reader participation is the new...

You can call me Professor Wiese.
I taught my first English class today. It was alright. I was nervous and I felt a little under-prepared, but my students seemed to enjoy the class. It is odd to call them students, as they were around 20 years my senior and almost all had several children. I was, though, the only one with a beard. I’m assuming that as I continue teaching my eyesight will deteriorate—forcing me to wear...

WatchWatch
This is the third afternoon in a row that it has done this. Maybe not exciting to some, but for the California boy I am, it is. The mornings are nice and pleasant, than, somewhere between 3:30 and 5:00 the lightning starts, and then it’s raining for who knows how long. After I recorded this, it hailed for 5 minutes. Hail the size of large peas or small grapes. I was sitting in my bedroom...

Mexico
This marks the end of my second full day in Mexico City. It feels like I have not done that much in those days, but when I look back on it, I have done quite a bit. Last night, for example, I went and watched the Mexico vs. Honduras fútbol game at an apartment of some of James and Lauren’s friends. Mexico won. There are actually a lot of things going on but most of them are still...

Luggage
I finished packing for Mexico yesterday. Here are some facts (TMI warning): The luggage weighs 85 pounds, distributed into two bags. 2 Pounds of that is robe. That is 2 pounds of pure lounge comfort. One of these bags was the same one I took to Germany and to D.C. I packed 3 pairs of shoes and will be wearing one more. The only liquid I packed was my favorite brand of soap. 17 percent of...
